Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is an Indian sitcom that airs on SAB TV. The show first aired on July 28, 2008 and is produced by Neela Telefilms. The show and its title are based on the column Duniya Ne Oondha Chashmah (Gujaratiદુનિયાને ઉંધા ચશ્મા) which loosely translates to "Seeing The World Through Upside-Down glasses" written by columnist and journalist Taarak Mehta for the Gujarati weeklymagazine Chitralekha.[1]
In August 2010, the show beat Colors TV's popular serial Balika Vadhu.[2] It has often been noted for its frequent references to issues of social importance in the country and its positive approach towards the problems faced by the society.[3] Lauded performances by its lead and supporting actors alike have also contributed in making the show a success.[4] On June 22, 2012, the show completed 900 episodes thus becoming the longest running daily comedy show of all time on indian television.[citation needed]
The serial's producer Asit Modi spend lot of money on the construction of sets.[5] The outer set is made of wooden planks and the inner sets are located at different studios in the Dadasaheb Phalke Filmcity.[5] In March 2012, the set was renovated.[6]

[edit]Plot

The serial is based on the happenings of Gokuldham Society and the day-to-day life of its members. The Gokuldham society is a mix of India's social fabric which is mentioned in the sitcom to be present in Powder Gali, Goregaon EastMumbai. In the society live Gujaratis, Marathis, Punjabis, Biharis, South Indians, Bengalis, Parsis and Muslims in harmony.
All the people of the society are good friends and they share a great sense of camaraderie among each other. Gokuldham Society celebrates all the festivals together, with pomp and vigour. They do quarrel with each other at times, but soon enough patch things up. Whenever there are any mishaps, the entire society comes together and tackles the problem and helps each other. The society members live together like a family. Gokuldham Society depicts a miniature India as it shows "Unity In Diversity".

[edit]Gada Family

The story mainly revolves around Jethalal Champaklal Gada and his family. Gada family is Kutchi-Gujarati Jain. Jethalal is a successful businessman and runs an electronic store, "Gada Electronics", in Andheri, Mumbai. He has only studied until class 10 and cannot speakEnglish. This serial captures the drama of his day to day life and his interactions with the people of Gokuldham society. His wife, Daya Jethalal Gada, is an uneducated, family oriented woman, who has studied till class 7. She is always ready to dance the "Garba"(gujrati folk dance) and people call her "Garba Queen". She is from Ahmedabad. She is shown to be always on the phone with her mother, who finds new and funny names for Jethalal. She calls Jethalal as "Tapu Ke Papa" as she, like many Indian housewife, think it is sin to take the husband's name. Jethalal often scolds her. Despite this, there is love and unity between the two main protagonists of this show.
They have a son Tipendra Jethalal Gada(Tappu), who is smart but very naughty. Tappu is the leader of society's children's brigade known as "Tappu Sena". Champaklal Jayantilal Gada, father of Jethalal is a very kind man and an ideal grandfather in his late sixties. He is an ardent gandhian. He is very religious and the entire society respects him. He often scolds Jethalal when he disrespects Daya. He looks like his father Late Jayantilal Girdharlal Gada.
A prominent non-resident of Gokuldham society is Daya's brother, Sundarlal(Sundar), referred to by Daya as "Sundar veera". He is very affectionate towards his sister and nephew, but creates problems for Jethalal. A common situation involves Sundar travelling all the way from Ahmedabad to Mumbai in an air conditioned taxi and asking Jethalal to pay the fare, giving excuses that he doesn't have enough cash while promising to pay back the money soon, which he never does. Jethalal gets irritated by him and refers to Sundar as "Panoti" meaning "Unlucky person".

[edit]Mehta Family

Taarak Mehta is a writer by profession and is the narrator of the show as well as Jethalal's best friend in the Society. Whenever Jethalal has a problem, Taarak Mehta acts as his "fire brigade". Taarak Mehta is portrayed to be a modern man who, however, does not forget his traditional values. He helps everybody in society. His wife, Anjali Taarak Mehta, is a dietician and feeds her husband only with diet-rich foods such as freshly prepared "bitter-gourd juice and khichdi". She is a good friend of all ladies of society.

[edit]Bhide Family

The Marathi family, the Bhides, consists of Aatmaram Tukaram Bhide, a teacher, who is forever nostalgic about "good old times", his wife Madhavi Aatmaram Bhide, and their daughter Sonu Aatmaram Bhide. Aatmaram is also the secretary of the society and often says himself as "ekmev secretary" meaning "one and only secretary". He has a love-hate relationship with Jethalal and his family. He had a scooter which never starts which he later, after much persuasion for all the members of the society, decided to sell off. He is usually shown to be complaining about Tappu's mischief. He always want to maintain discipline in society but no one listens to him. His wife Madhavi is a home-based businesswoman who sells "achaar" meaning "pickle" and "papad". She often gets tired of her husband's behaviour. His daughter Sonu is a intelligent girl and is Tappu's best friend. One of Aatmaram's worries in life is that Sonu would fall in love with Tappu.

[edit]Iyer Family

The Iyer family consists of Krishnan Subrahmaniam Iyer and his wife Babita Krishnan Iyer. Krishnan Iyer is a South Indian hailing from Chennai who is a well-known scientist and his wife Babita isBengali from Kolkata. While Krishnan Iyer's complexion is dark, Babita is fair. Jethalal has a innocent crush on Babita. Jethalal often flirts with Babita ji, but every time his efforts come to naught because of her husband. So, he always looks for a reason to settle scores and get back at Jethalal Gada. Babita is a beautiful, modern woman. She thinks Jethalal and Daya as her good friends and opposes her husband whenever he fights with Jethalal.

[edit]Sodhi Family

The Sodhis are a pair of Punjabi husband and Parsi wife having the same name. Theirs is a love marriage. Roshan Singh Ajit Singh Sodhi, is a garage owner and is a happy-go-lucky person who gets aggressive with those who mess with him or any of the society members. He is always ready for a party and the subsequent drinking binge. Mrs. Roshan Kaur Roshan Singh Sodhi is a housewife with a pleasant personality. She loves her husband and son. She doesn't like her husband's habit of drinking, which seems to be the only fly in the ointment of their happy married life. They have a son, Gurucharan Singh Roshan Singh Sodhi(Gogi), who is the youngest child in the Tappu Sena.

[edit]Hathi Family

The Bihari family of Hathis include Dr Hansraj Hathi, a doctor who is morbidly obese, who is fond of eating. He often comments as "Sahi baat hai" meaning "that's right". His wife Komal Hansraj Hathi, who is also morbidly obese, is a modern woman and a housewife who tries to keep a check on her husband's and son Goli's eating habits. Goli Hansraj Hathi is like his father who is always eating food. He is very naughty and often scolded by the adults.

[edit]Other members

Another funny character in the show is Patrakar Popatlal, a journalist from Toofan Express(a parody of the real-life newspaper Indian Express) who also resides in the society. He is a North Indianand hails from Bhopal. He is very cynical and demands everything to be cancelled, with the tag lines "cancel kardo" and "duniya hila doonga". He always carries an umbrella with him. Born on February 29, he always tries to marry but in vain.
In the evenings, all the men in the society meet after dinner at the shop nearby the society for their regular glass of soda. The shop is run by Abdul, a simple Muslim person who is like a member of the society. A news reporter named Rita Shrivastav is also the member of the society, who always helps the ladies and children. She works as a correspondent for the news channel "Kal Tak"(parody of a real-life Hindi news channel named Aaj Tak). There is always a fight between Popatlal (print journalist) and Rita (television news reporter), as they both consider their media as superior to the other. There is another boy named Pinku Diwan, who lives alone and his parents are never shown in the show and are assumed to be working abroad.
Natwarlal Prabhashankar Udaywala (Nattu Kaka) is an employee in Jethalal's electronics shop. He is in his sixties but consideres himself as young and speaks some English. He constantly demands that his salary be increased. Whenever Jethalal scolds him, he pretends to have hearing problem and says, "aapne mujhse kucch kahaa?"(Did you say something to me) . Bageshwar Dadukh Udaywala(Baga) is Nattu Kaka's nephew and Jethalal's employee. He is funny and creates problems in Jethalal's life. Baga always says, "jaisi jiski soch"(Each to his way of thinking). The uncle and nephew both have a great bonding with each other.
